Le Tortorelle
A holiday at Le Tortorelle is an immersion into Umbrian holistic country living. An organic farm and country house, Le Tortorelle is run by a wonderful Italian family. Theresa is a terrific cook, preparing vegetarian meals with 50% of the ingredients coming from their organic gardens as well as giving cooking lessons. They bake their own bread from organic wholemeal flour, make desserts without sugar as well as traditional Italian sweets and also produce a variety of natural cosmetics, mainly from home grown aloe - hand and face creams, toothpaste and anti-cellulite creams. Set in a verdant landscape, the property is about 6 kilometers outside Umbertide in the Niccone valley, close to the Umbria/Tuscany border. Accommodation is on a B&B, half board or full board basis.
Accommodation and features
There are 5 bedrooms in the main house (3 upstairs and 2 downstairs) which can accommodate between 2 and 4 people per room. All bedrooms have an ensuite bathroom with shower (one bedroom having a bath tub and shower).
Bedrooms 1 & 2 are on the ground floor with external private entrances. Bedroom 1 can sleep up to 4 whilst Bedroom 2 can sleep up to 3.
Bedrooms 3, 4 and 5 are on the upper floor with access from the lounge. Bedroom 3 sleeps up to 3, Bedroom 4 is a double and Bedroom 5 sleeps up to 4.
The communal facilities include a large comfortable lounge and a farmhouse kitchen/dining room, although most meals are served on the large covered terrace at the back of the house overlooking the gardens and hills beyond. There are no cooking facilities available for guests but there are tea/coffee making facilities and a fridge for storing snacks.
The accommodation is available on a bed & breakfast basis, half board or full board. All meals are vegetarian and vegans can be catered for if advised in advance. The bedrooms are cleaned thoroughly for your arrival and fresh linen and towels are provided weekly.
Outside
There are extensive gardens and some lovely spots to sit, unwind and look at the view. The grounds cover 5 hectares including woods, cultivated areas and wild garden. There is an outside unheated saltwater pool with loungers, situated a little way from the house, shared with other guests that might be staying at the time. There is a small aviary and the property is also home to two dogs, cats, geese, hens and pigeons.
Other Information
Le Tortorelle is well placed for visiting Umbrian and Tuscan towns like Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, Cortona and Arrezzo with Sienna and Florence comfortable day trips. Lago Trasimeno makes a delightful trip with several picturesque villages around the shores and a ferry running to the two main islands. The local town of Umbertide has an excellent supermarket, weekly market and other shops. There are also some very good restaurants and pizzerias in the area.
However, you may just want to take it easy around Le Tortorelle, enjoying the views, the food and the pool. For something a little more demanding you can join in the weekly yoga sessions held at certain times of the year, or partake in one of the half day courses run by family members. You can choose from Italian Vegetarian Cooking, Bread making, Cheese making, Seitan making, Traditional Italian desserts, Jam making and preserving or Natural cosmetics preparation (all dependent on sufficient numbers and reasonable proficiency in Italian!).
Aldo and Theresa can also arrange for visits to a local honey producer or the nearby Alpaca farm.
Massage, Reiki and Acupuncture sessions can be organised in the comfort of your own room.
A baby sitting service is also available.
The property is in a rural position so a car is essential to explore the area or even go shopping but if you prefer to just enjoy Le Tortorelle and do not want to hire a car then it might be possible to arrange transport to collect and return you from/to a nearby airport or train station - please ask for information on this.
The closest airport is Perugia (35 minutes) served by Ryan Air from Stansted UK. Other possible airports are Bologna (Forli), Ancora, Pisa and Rome. There is a very good train service from Terontola (30 mins away) to Rome and Florence/Pisa.
